Approaches to Teaching and Learning

The Teaching Quality Standards of Alberta states that “teachers appreciate individual differences and believe all students can learn, albeit at different rates and in different ways. They recognize students’ different learning styles and the different ways they learn, and accommodate these differences in individuals and groups of students including students with special learning needs.  Teachers understand the fluidity of teaching and learning. They constantly monitor the effectiveness and appropriateness of their practices and students’ activities, and change them as needed.

I believe that I have met this standard by demonstrating the following:

  • Acknowledging the specific learning needs of all students and working with them to ensure appropriate styles and approaches to learning are being practiced.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to develop differentiated instructional strategies to meet the needs of all learners.
  • Evaluate student achievement on a continual and ongoing basis, and reteaching concepts or material wherever needed according to student responses through feedback and conferencing.
  • Accepting that some approaches to teaching and learning do not work, and be able to recognize such circumstances and use them to improve on the practices and approaches within my class.
